A dummy's comments, do take it too serious...
1. I do think 'sum over histories' is ridiculous. It is a determinism. I don't like it as well as anthropic.
2. I can't understand "uncertainty principle". I think particles' position and velocity are fixed in a way that we are not recognized now.
I agree with following opinion:
1, There is no single formulation of the fundamental theory.
2, The whole collection of different formulations could be regarded as a complete unified theory.
At this point Hawking gives a vivid example of map to the surface of the earth. You can't use a single map to describe the surface of the earth, you need at least 2 maps in the case of the earth. Each map is valid only in a limited region, but different maps will have a region of overlap. The collection of maps provides a complete description of the surface.
