Sean Bender, a novelist from Manhattan, returns to Annapolis after a long absence to attend his best friendas funeral. The police attribute his friendas death to suicide, but that doesnat make sense to Sean. Chuck OaMalley was never a quitter, and Sean couldnat see him taking his own life. After the funeral, Chuckas lawyer tells Sean to stay in town for a few days. Chuck has left him something substantial, and it will take that long for the will to pass through probate. Sean uses the time to investigate what happened to Chuck. This involves exploring both the city and the people who played an important part in Chuckas life. It also means going back in time to examine the complicated history that Sean had with Chuck and with Chuckas widow, the only woman Sean has ever loved.
