Twelve-year-old Jon O'Neal gets in trouble when he is discovered skulking about his neighbor's tulip beds accompanied by Otis, his dog. Shortly thereafter, Jon is kidnapped by a strange character named Pete, but manages to escape, only to get lost in the woods. Jon wakes up in the hospital after this ordeal and attempts to tell his mother about the evil Nelsons, their next-door neighbors. Mrs. O'Neal concludes that Jon's over-active imagination, coupled with the concussion she believes he received from falling off the roof, are at fault.
