1. What Steve Jobs Learned From Edwin Land of Polaroid
You can’t become a great chess player by just remembering all the moves of all the games that a grandmaster has played. There are just too many board combinations.
#1. Business should be at the intersection of art and science.
#2. The ideal business is composed of managers and dreamers, and it is the responsibility of the former to protect the latter.
#3. When the facts come home to roost and they are not what you expect, reach out and embrace them anyway.
#4. Companies quickly deteriorate after they lose leaders that define their culture.

Reflecting years later on his spiritual feelings, he said that religion was at its best when it emphasized spiritual experiences rather than received dogma.
"The juice goes out of Christianity when it becomes too based on faith rather than on living like Jesus or seeing the world as Jesus saw it"
"I think different religions are different doors to the same house. Sometimes I think the house exists, sometimes I don't. It's the great mystery."
Kudos to Steve for embracing the ultimate mystery. If we're honest (and Jesus says we should be honest), none of us truly know. We hope for a mystery at best. And that's what makes true belief well worth the journey.

#1. Jobs believed that Zen meditation taught him to concentrate and ignore distractions.
from Quora: There are different levels one can practice Buddhist teachings. Steve Jobs probably practiced simplicity to the degree of shedding everything that could distract him from his entrepreneurial ambitions.
Anonymous: http://www.quora.com/Zen-Buddhism/STEVE-JOBS-used-to-meditate-and-used-to-believe-and-live-in-simplicity-but-he-invented-some-of-the-most-materialistic-products-in-the-world-Why-this-contradiction
#2. He also learned to trust intuition and curiosity — what Buddhists call "beginner's mind" — over analysis and preconceptions.
He got to the aesthetic part of Zen — the relationship between lines and spaces, the quality and craftsmanship,But he didn't stay long enough to get the Buddhist part, the compassion part, the sensitivity part.

Suzuki-roshi
downplayed the enticing concept of enlightenment in favor of slow, steady mindfulness practice “with no gaining idea” — that is, with no hope that your next session on the cushion would bring about a shattering, life-changing flash of satori.
the path was the goal.the journey is the reward

Why Steve meditates or study buddhism, do some totally opposite things? LIke, materialism, squeeze chinese workers.
Steve Jobs wasn't a Buddha (I don't even know whether he identified himself as a Buddhist). There are different levels one can practice Buddhist teachings. Steve Jobs probably practiced simplicity to the degree of shedding everything that could distract him from his entrepreneurial ambitions.[乔布斯本人并不是buddha,他更多的是学习了其中的concentration和inspiration部分]

Other inspiring thoughts, not about Steves
"Contradiction" is usually in the eye of the beholder (unless you are working on a logic problem or something) who wants to squeeze people into simplistic moral categories in order to make them look worse than they are in actuality.

07.03
one of the two or three most important things
Jobs told television's "60 Minutes" he modeled his own business after the rock group, the Beatles.
对focus和simplicity:
Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple, But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.

07.04
#1. theme of non-duality:
Jobs, his life work was all about the intersection and combination of distinct things that together made something unique and even inspiring:we believe that it's technology married with the humanities that yields us the result that makes our heart sing
Hero/shithead dichotomy:He was someone who struggled with relationship to others, emotional volatility, resentment but who also stood at the intersection of innovation, genius, and human relationship and went forward moment by moment, faults and all.
#2. Focus&Removing excess thought
The removal of excess thought also enabled Jobs to focus on his unique direction by steering away from what was purported to be the latest great thing. This allowed him to fit together pieces from many different influences giving strength to his intuitive sense of where the road was going and not where it had already been.
design:It seems almost certain that Jobs would have been aware of the spatial concept of “ma”. With “ma”, what is removed is as important as all that remains.
#3. theme of simple living
Simplicity, as Steve Jobs and his head designer Jony Ive contended, is a result of hard work and the embracing of complexity.
#4. self-reliant

而要达到“简约”,乔布斯很好地学会了禅的两个精华,一个是concentration,一个是beginner's mind;

07.07
His aversion to authority was something wiry and weird intensity with aloof rebelliousness:
He was usually off in a corner doing something on his own and really didn't want to have much of anything to do with either me or the rest of the class.

07.08
The kids who went to Stanford, they already knew what they wanted to do, they were't artistic. I wanted something that was more artistic and interesting.

07.09
I began to realize that an intuitive understanding and consciousness was more significant than abstract thinking and intellectual logical analysis.
From Kottke," It was a deep influence,. You see it in his whole approach of stark, minimalist aesthetics, intense focus."
对steve的Intensity: The thing that struck me was his intensity. Whatever he was interested in he would generally carry to an irrational extreme."

07.10
Taking LSD was a profound experience, one of the most important things in my life. LSD shows you that there's another side to the coin, and you can't remember it when i wears off, but you know it. It reinforced my sense of what was important_creating great things instead of making money, putting things back into the stream of history and of human consciousness as much as i could.

We used to discuss free will versus determinism. I tended to believe that things were much more determined, that we were programmed. If we had perfect information, we cold predict people's actions. Steve felt the opposite.
That outlook accorded with his faith in the power of the will to bend reality.

07.11
Western rational thought is not an innate human characteristic; it is learned and is the great achievement of western civilization. In the villages of India, they never learned it. They learned something else, which is in some ways just as valuable but in other ways is not. That's the power of intuition and experiential wisdom.
