This work presents cellular and clinical studies of solute and water transport across the membranes that cover the distal surfaces of the lungs, detailing both selective and non-selective solute diffusion. It investigates evidence of active movement in preparations ranging from intact animals and whole lungs to cells grown upon various substrates, isolated cells and cell membranes.
