内容简介:
Nine-year-old Nila sits by the tiny apartmentas dingy window, pondering how her life has changed. Her lovely island home is far away, her father is dead, and her mother is constantly working in the grocery store below their apartment. Mr. Lotz, their landlord and store owner, is a big, burly man who keeps a watchful eye on the small, clumsy girl who knocks things off the shelves simply by passing by. As he looms over her Nila feels like a tiny fish in a sea full of sharks. Lonely and bored, Nila befriends a seagull who recurrently visits her fire escape. They play jokes on unsuspecting passersby. Nila defies her motheras orders to stay inside the apartment and follows the seagull on an adventure through the crowded city streets. Nila finds the things she misses from her island home and people who care about her.
