Justin Hornsby, an engineering student, angers a wizard and is exiled to an alternate Earth, where magic, not science and technology, is operative. Following the Oracleas instructions, he and Vantrel must make a hazardous journey into the heart of Dismal Swamp, an evil place filled with evil creatures created by a sorcerer over 500 years earlier. In the sorcereras keep, they search for and find a key which has the magical property of allowing its user to absorb the entire contents of any book They also encounter a major demon trapped in a pentagram.
