Scarred is set in Botswana in the 1970s, when apartheid was rife in South Africa and its effects rippled to neighboring countries, including Botswana. A young Black Botswana girl is raped by a White priest, one of her father's trusted colleagues. Her father is a priest who works for the Dutch Reform Church owned by White South Africans. As the girl grows up, she longs for life outside the church; she starts smoking cigarettes, steals her father's church wine, and sneaks out at night to meet her boyfriend. At nineteen, she narrowly escapes death from a car bomb supposedly planted by White South Africans, which propels her to evaluate her choices and to discover a second chance at life. This fact-based fictional story is Nanky's story. She never found courage to tell her secrets until now. The story is both bitter and funny. The experiences are warm and heartfelt, told in a casual, comical, and entertaining manner.
