This is the story of a reluctant warrior who slays a young prince on a battlefield. He becomes so distressed at this event that he spends his life seeking advice and comfort from the four great Buddhist sages of 13th century Japan. During his quest for solace, he suffers the agony of the death of his beloved wife and the death of his patriarchal commander, which forces him to leave a lifetime of military service and take up residence in a Buddhist monastery. Over a sixty-year period of pursuing encounters with the Buddhist sages, the warrior learns the meaning of life and the way of peaceful existence. This odyssey forges his character, which leads to a spiritual liberation through a transcendent awakening.
