The shock of the gruesome murders left the city paralyzed with fear and horror. Neighbors of the decedents were unable to offer the police any definitive worthwhile information, with the exception of Mrs. Golda Nussbaum of Apartment 3B. She apprised the investigating officers that she had seen a man delivering clothing from a neighborhood dry cleaning store "that very day." She said he was a black man.
