During the winter of 1863, the momentum of the war favored the Confederates. Drastic changes for the Union Army are underway. General Grant's build-up is succeeding, but advancing the army has stalled. Lester Gammons is assigned to lead a small band of Union sharpshooters in clearing a path for Grant. With Rabbit's disappearance, his guardian, Pauline Cushman, brings real concern for the boy's welfare. Through manipulation of both Presidents Lincoln and Jefferson, the double agent, Pauline, is able to employ the services of Ezekiel Trinity in finding the boy and returning him safely to Virginia. During the mission, secrets are revealed to Trinity that answer many of his questions about Pauline. With the cause of the South calling Ezekiel back to duty, unfinished business must be concluded with both Gammons and Cushman. The Battle of Chancellorsville puts Trinity on a direct path with both destinies.
