Jeffries' journey through life is interesting, but very peculiar. Instead of having emotional human relationships, he puts all his time and passion into creating and maintaining a small scale model world in his back garden, which is circled by his beloved model trains. His strange lifestyle means that he is usually alienated from his family, but he is desperately needed to babysit his grandson, Andy. Whilst in Jeffries' care, Andy has an accident in the garden. Plagued with guilt, Jeffries has to reassess what is really important to him. When his garden is violated and vandalized by youths, he is on a collision course to an emotional breakdown. This is a story of obsession, addiction, and estrangement. Grounded in a cast of strong and believable characters, it is lent vivid life by concentrating on unusual objects and settings. The Station Master is easy to read, but hard to forget.
