The Gray Wolf Concordat is a Civil War tale of a plot to bring the British into the war on the side of the Confederacy. The protagonist, a United States Navy medical officer, Doctor Karl Wolfgang Manheim III, and his assistant, Lieutenant Commander Edward Lull, are deployed by President Abraham Lincoln to uncover the plot. The pair become a combination of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson with James Bond overtones, in seeking out the plot and its perpetrators. Cryptographs and coded messages abound. Their mission takes them to Europe-England, Ireland, France, and Germany. Along the way they encounter many famous personages including Otto von Bismarck, Prime Minister of Prussia; Emperor Napoleon III of France; French impressionist painters Cezanne and Manet; and others including James McNeil Whistler, an American expatriate living in France. John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's assassin, threads throughout the tale. The foiling of the plot is critical to the Union's success at the battle of Gettysburg.
