It all begins in Northern California where a spirited two-horse race takes place during a violent rainstorm. After the unexpected demise of her parents, Raynee takes the money her mother had secretly saved for her and heads for Oregon. There, she buys a property from Duke Wagner, owner of Whiskey Hill Ranch. At the time, Raynee is restless and vaguely aware of a longing to accomplish something for her mother. Through Duke, she meets Jerome Eller, a handsome and diversely talented young cowboy who just happens to be extremely wealthy. They slowly manage to form a shaky relationship, which takes a roller-coaster ride due to her eventual addiction to alcohol and his fear of commitment. One day, Raynee wakes up to the fact that her life lacks meaning. This leads her to some rather unexpected behavior away from her friends at Whiskey Hill.
