Unknown to them or their superiors, who have unwittingly sent them on a suicide mission, the invading armies of Flame giants spill into the western kingdom of Car'nehge, causing great devastation. With their ability to bring forth hot fire, they burn cities, defeat the goblin warlords, subjugate the population and embark on their greedy crusade of blazing destruction toward the Empire, seeking its golden riches. The entire realm of Atlas is declared to be part of their growing Chaktuishnain Empire, their conquest that they've deserved from the dawn of time-their manifest destiny. The peaceful neighboring nations of Keilstrom and Barrenrift struggle to mobilize their defenses, or seek peace, against the marauding giants. Among them they have to overcome the bias of their arrogance. Meanwhile Roak sets off to set up his operations. He and his companionsget off to an inauspicious start. Several members do not enjoy each other's company and begin to suspect they may be sheltering a traitor among them. They struggle to agree on their best approach, while exceptionally talented, they stumble as they attempt to penetrate farther into Recna's domain. Recna's power has long since dwarfed their expectations. Their enemies grow faster than they wish, as their hunt for Recna begins to stagger and falter. The Avokites finally seem to get back on track when they inexplicably blunder into a seemingly harmless yet desperate situation in which all of them might not survive....
