She became hopelessly lost until she met Ben, a slave, who had died just after the end of the American Civil War. During the war, Ben had brought numerous fellow slaves into the caves and later led them to the Underground Railroad and freedom. Ben helped Janel find her way out of the caves and saved her life with a light show that culminated in the death of Ronald.
