内容简介:
Whippoorwills in the Evening is the story of the beginning of the exodus of the rural people to the cities. It is also the story of one boy's struggle to earn enough money to buy school clothes and shoes to attend school. It's trying to earn a living while sharecropping and using your children as labor to the detriment of their education. But it's also about having fun in spite of the poverty. And about family values and how the family unit was once the most important thing. But it's also about a boy enjoying his life and all his friends. It's about his beloved grandmother who struggled as a widow woman to raise her seven children and then took on the thankless job of raising the boy and his younger sister. It's about the goodness of neighbors and how everyone used to pull together in the farm communities and share their good fortunes. It's a book boys will identify with and old men will say: AI used to do that when I was a kid," and remember those days. They were not good old days; they were tough old days. Neighbors could be counted on to share with neighbor and to mourn a family's bad fortune. They were God-fearing people who felt an obligation to help their neighbors. The book is total fiction but is based on a life lived in that community. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it. I also hope you will appreciate the standards people set for themselves and realize those are the values we have lost.
