Fourteen-year-old Shomari is sent to the Napa Boysa Home when his grandmother is unable to care for him. Shomari is a streetwise youngster who grew up in a very unstable environment. He gets into all kinds of trouble at first, has a bad attitude and feels like he is in a prison. His teacher visits him in isolation, encouraging him and bringing him books. But Shomari is not interested in learning anything new. He befriends a young boy who convinces Shomari to do his school work and helps him study. Thanks to Ms. Phillips and Allenas encouragement, Shomari overcomes his fear of algebra and begins to excel in his studies. He learns about real prison life when former inmates visit the boysa home. He develops better social skills while managing to stay out of trouble. Eventually Shomari goes home to live with his mother and grandmother. He has overcome a number of obstacles and finds out that life does not revolve around being a hustler. His story will be inspiring to all readers, including young adults who are headed for potential trouble.
