Roses and Razorwire is a fictional story about Samantha Sawyer, a fifty-year-old unemployed car plant assembler, who trains and succeeds in becoming a prison guard in an all-male correctional institution. It documents her trials and tribulations along the way, beginning with the third week of training and ending with her arrival home from the hospital after an attempted rape and almost fatal stabbing during a riot at the prison. It journals the sacrifices she makes for her daughter, Cassie, her day-to-day routine as a prison guard and the slow alienation from her husband Jesse.
