In the early morning hours of June 17, 1775, 1,200 Americans fortified a hill on the Charlestown Peninsula within sight of the 5,000 British troops occupying the city of Boston. These craftsmen, clerks and farmers threw out a challenge to the British to come out and fight them on ground of their choosing.
