Hope Street may be just an ordinary terraced street in Leeds, but it's the whole world to Maggie Fish. When her father returns home from the war the whole family looks forward to happier times, but Maggie's mother dies in childbirth leaving Johnnie Fish a bitter widower, resentful of his baby son. By contrast Maggie can do no wrong and Johnnie encourages her to sing at the Working Men's Club. With the help of talented pianist Charlie Chipperfield, a new vaudeville act - Fish and Chipperfield - is born, and Maggie sets out on the road to fame and fortune.
