The last straw

You remind me of myself when I was your age.

Here is a rule of thumb: if you are not sure what you will be like ten years from now, just observe your colleagues or your boss, and very probably, you will become one of them.

Andrea’s last straw is not Miranda’s interminable abuse or her pathetic private life, but a very positive comment from Miranda: you remind me of myself when I was your age. Emily, the ambitious fashion climber would surely take that as the highest compliment but for Andrea, whose dream job is editor for The New Yorker, that comment is, definitely, a humiliation.

What is Miranda like? Undoubtedly, she is an icon, a fashion icon whose words and decisions are so important that they SEEM to penetrate into people’s daily life. Everyone in the Runway completely accepts Miranda as an icon with impeccable fashion sense, while obliterating the fact that she comes as a PERSON first. A PERSON who also weeps, disappoints, and rejoices.

As a fashion icon, Miranda is surely the beacon for the whole industry, but as a person, she sucks: adored by everyone but loved by none: she knows everyone by name, by their titles, but not by their personality.

Andrea does not even need a choice, it is obvious. If she moves on, she ends up being another Miranda. Everyone adores Miranda but not all of them want to be another Miranda.
