Both black and white intellectuals assessed the work of individual writers and black literature in general in periodicals, and in letters, speeches, and interviews. In addition, virtually every book of fiction and poetry published during the Harlem Renaissance was reviewed in mainstream periodicals. Several critics attempted either annual or periodic assessment of black literary output. For example, Alain Locke published an annual survey of black literature in "Opportunity" magazine from 1930 through 1938, while W.E.B. Du Bois sponsored a symposium in Crisis that spanned eight months in 1926, in which participants responded to a questionnaire on the topic, "The Negro Art: How Shall He Be Portrayed." This volume includes the many essays and editorials which appeared in these periodicals.
