内容简介:

Fred Burkhardt, plagued by memories of his past, escapes into a world of imagination with bizarre results. Following a traumatic incident involving his wife, Fred transforms himself first into a transvestite teacher, then a displaced intellectual. While hitchhiking to find new horizons, he accepts a ride from a construction laborer. They decide it is in their best mutual interest to become roommates while seeking the means of a better life. Time passes and it appears it is time to again seek their separate fortunes. The roommate, who is just as emotionally unstable as Fred, induces him into a scheme to leave this planet for another in a spaceship that turns out to be a death trap. Fred, cautious and suspicious of the aSwami, a decides to go along with his roommate as a means of possibly protecting him from harm. For final preparation for their flight to another world, the travelers are given amedicationa to assist their transition. Fearing the worst, Fred palms his first dose, however, under the scrutiny of the Swamias security, he ingests a second pill. Apparently, his fears are not misplaced. Fred is areincarnateda on another sphere, where he comes to recognize a being called Iggy as one who has appeared several times in his life in different guises. He cannot tell reality from the imaginary until Iggy has, through sequences of memory recall and mindfulness, succeeded in restoring Fredas self-integration. Iggy is the mind behind his mind.
