Each is around four inches tall, each possesses a unique gift, and each is dedicated to protecting children from the evil Dream Takeraa creature in the form of a spider who feeds from the dreams of orphaned children. While guarding in New York, two SubguardiansaKlipspringer and Skibbereenaaccidentally shrink a child, Jamie, to their own height. Unable to leave Jamie in a house full of dangers, and with the hope of returning him to his original size before morning, they decide to take him to meet the mysterious Guardian. Intercepted by Jamieas giant pet cat, Klipspringer escapes death via the Subguardiansa usual method of transportation. By stepping into a photograph, they are relocated 126 years into the past to a small mining community in Scotland while being followed secretly by the Dream Taker.
