内容简介:
The early twentieth-century South is an lackadaisical place for the populaceathat is, unless one was black or homosexual. Lane David is a white lad, struggling with his sexuality; Joe Warfield is a young Negro in love with Joan, Laneas sister. The two boys have been friends all of their lives. After Joe impregnates Joan, he leaves. As an adult, Lane is handsome and talented. One day, a music professor from England drives through his backwoods hollow and, after hearing Lane talk, offers the youth voice lessons. Later, Joe returns and stays with the David family. One night, the Ku Klux Klan calls. The ensuing battle rages long into the evening. The morning light finds the yard cluttered with dead bodies. Lane, Joe, Joan and her baby hasten to Huntsville. When they arrive, the music professor arranges their passage to England. Notwithstanding, Laneas musical pursuit in England offers little safety. A bounty hunter kidnaps him and returns him to Alabama to face charges for killing a Klan member.
