Delora is an ordinary fifteen-year-old girl who lives in the mythical Audel Islands. Her only ambition is to marry handsome canal guard, Rhell, when she comes of age, and raise a family. However, Zimbalest, an ambitious member of the temple hierarchy, who holds the title aFather of the Light, a decides she is the one who can, with his tutorship, help him gain the power he craves to rule the islands. He grooms her to take the place of the aged, ailing High Priestess, Astasia, until quite by accident, he finds another means of achieving his goal. Delora is now unnecessary and in the way; he must get rid of her.
