When Tabor, an old prophetess, sees a dark vision of blood, she knows that Appalachia as she knows it will change. Tabor tries to help several lost friends who will die if she cannot find the help she seeks. She races against social prejudices and demonic windigo that plague Harlan and its surrounding area. She is halted, however, when she must make her adversary a friend in order to help those she loves. Navei Homes, an owner of several coal mines, holds the key to helping control and maybe even rid Harlan County of its horrible curse. Homesa prejudiced views and personal vendetta hinder Tabor and force her to play mind tricks with Homes in order to help her see the light. In her quest to save and warn the people of Harlan, she proves her abilities as a prophet, leads strangers to God, and proves that age doesnat hinder wisdom.
