General Ikpeba took power in a bloody coup in a young republic that was struggling to practice democracy that they had inherited from the British. Initially, he was hailed and welcomed as a messiah that had come to deliver the people from what they thought was an unreasonable government. However, events thereafter made the citizens wonder who they had accepted to govern them. But it was too late. His hands were firmly in control.
