The desolate face of Liberia brightened with hope and glory when on August 11, 2003, Charles Taylor, under increased pressure, stepped down from office as president and fled the country. Two years later, in 2005, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected as president. Founded by free African-American slaves, Liberia flourished as an independent state from 1847 until 1989, when it was plunged into a brutal civil war which claimed the lives of approximately 300,000 people and displaced about a million as refugees in neighboring countries. Deeply traumatized and terrorized by mortal horrors of war and persecutions, even in the country of my asylum, I resorted to poetry as a safe haven of protection and hope, seeing through the darkness an emerging light of glory.
