内容简介:
Health and Society in Bengal is a selection of articles on health, medicine, disease and sexuality published in a variety of Bengali journals between 1850 and 1900. It offers a picture of trends in the practice of science in the 19th century and also the subjects that were seen as important and hence, prioritized. The volume also shows that while on the one hand colonial power and hegemony influenced definitions of late 19th century science, on the other hand, the indigenous school made every effort to preserve control over science itself. The essays depict areas of conflict and tension between the health administrators and native population in implementing public health policies.
