Late nineteenth century: After the death of her young husband, Rebecca must return to her parents' home because women are not expected to work. Feeling she has to do something, however, she trains with the missionaries to care for the sick. But even they have restrictions on unattached females and will not allow her to go into field service. Remaining with her parents until their deaths, Rebecca, now aged thirty-two, decides to go to a remote part of Oklahoma to care for the sick. Yet again, though, she is thwarted--the superstitious hill people will not accept a newcomer. But things change when Rebecca meets Ole Woman...
