To be honest, this book is not actually a book but a piece of training materials.
The author, Jim Loehr co-works with Tony Schwartz, they don’t just establish a book to make a statement on an “Energy Management” theory, but as well, they are running a positive consulting company which describes and sets up a practical structure of being more than just good in all aspects.
The original assumption of the structure lays to a pyramid format. With the bottom “physical”, along with the way of “emotional” and “mental”, and to the top of “spiritual”.
The book is divided into 2 parts. Part I is about the approaching of problems. They assume they get one sample named Roger who is with a successful social background in business management. While this Roger, he’s got problems in daily energy consumption. And these problems reveals in 4 chapters of the pyramid. The ideas and stories told in Part I is simple and easy for everyone to realize, understand and admit. However, it is always a good thing for someone just to tell you a simple proposal, and put it into a well-organized structure which you know it all the time and you never bother to dig into the truth.
And Part II, very interesting, it goes down from the top “spiritual” to the bottom. The exposition of how “spiritual” part is so important to make everything different is that powerful, it is almost the core ideology of the book and the theory. But follow up with actions and guidance, there are too many valueless and less interesting contents you may just laugh around.
As training material, I appreciate a lot of this book because it starts with a distinct framework and a straight and to the point conclusion after each chapter. It basically helps the reader to read with a clear purpose and to understand by repeating key words that you won’t ignore.

The rhythms of energy
At the very beginning, we realize there a rhythms in human life and energy, that is circling like we consume and we recover right after. If the wave between consumption and recovery is frequent and stable, that means we’ve built up and cultivated a strong ability of energy management system.
What we defiantly need to do, to my understanding, is to learn and get to understand the body/physical as well as the rule of our brain works. And the rules we generally know about human brain and body is typical but not particularly you. We need to compare with the common rule with ourselves, how the body and brain of myself work. Then we need to draw a diagram of ourselves, and follow it no doubt.

Recovery is vital
The repeating emphasized idea of the book goes to “recovery is vital”, here, I just skip the advantages of frequent recovery but just go straight to “if we master the skill of fragments of time, we are even powerful in mind, which specifically means, for example, a magic ability to relax, to sleep at any time without interruption from environment. And on the other hand, it is even more powerful if you can turn this ability into being focused any moment you want.

Physical
We all know the world, the top 500 companies, and the bosses all want to us to work without any rest in 8 hours or even longer. The value of the worldwide business encourages and appreciates the attitude of fully make use of time. Whereas the somatic science shows us the opposite opinion. For this point, I could feel deeply about it. I only need 15 minutes nap after lunch, which regains me enough attention to continue and sustain the afternoon workload.
Starting with the topic about “physical”. Where I’m impressed by three major piece of knowledge we can hardly deny.
- The first one is about Glycemic index because we are all aware of the damage of too much sugar but the glycemic index is even more secluded. The higher the glycemic index is, the quicker we consume out our limited energy. And if we keep a lower glycemic index, the slow releasing could bring us longer and stable energy source. Of course, it’s not that difficult we may find whole grains, protein and fruit with lower sugar (strawberry, apple) could bring lower glycemic index. But, pay attention, if you’re suffering from coeliac disease, you must be more careful when facing grains.
- The second is about the frequency to feed. Absolutely, it is always a great idea that we don’t have to have full stomach for each meal. A good choice is to eat less and more frequently. The food you choose to eat between meals needs to be selected with extra care, usually, nuts, low sugar fruits are recommended, which can provide human body with longer energy.
- And for coffee, it’s the hardest part. Too much more caffeine dehydrates, and dehydration is difficult to be noticed when it’s not that serious. Dehydration makes you lose energy and feel more difficult to concentrate.

Emotional
The emotional part of introduction is barely nothing but chicken soup because everybody knows it is healthy to do more sports and make more friends.
===============================================================
Mental
The mental part is very helpful. It gives out practical and meaningful tips on sharpening your brain.
- It is as well as a life attitude, because no matter what period of lifetime you are going through, you’ll always have the opportunity to optimize your brain. Brain is such an outstanding organ which differs from others like liver, kidney or lungs. The more you use your brain, the shaper it becomes. By continuously promotion of brain activity and timely aerobic training/excise, we can reform the brain.
- For sustained knowledge, our brain needs time to process. And at first, after the provoking of new knowledge, it takes breaks, it recodes, and it build up new links of cell junctions. This is a moment of rejuvenation.
- We actually have another choice to rest our brain and save more energy without stopping thinking. Why? Because we human beings are created by god with 2 brains, left brain and right brain. Left brain of language nerves is majorly responsible for daily work which needs the ability of logic thinking, rules, singular facts and sensitivity of time. Whereas, our right brain if full of magic, it relies more on visual touch, space, overall outlook and even inspiration and gut feeling.
Sometimes we could hardly deny that when we stop following our left brain, and start to let it go, a better solution/idea is born at that moment.

Spiritual
I like the most on “spiritual” part because it is about values we hold which is beyond everything. It is even close to the debates and discovery on a philosophical level.
All what you have been through in your past life formed your value toward the world, people and yourself. Value is a profound objective of a person or a company. When the value is clear, it leads to spiritual energy and determination. As we know, determination drive you to full engagement of life.
And how to approach a great value is simple, or can’t be simper.
You just have to ask yourself 2 questions:
1. Am I caring about what I’m doing every day?
2. Am I believing on what I’m doing is meaningful?
===============================================================
Spiritual- Principles to set your final objective of life
For the first glance, I feel strongly the principle is nonsense but a string of rousing words: “constancy of purpose” “integrity” “excellence” “innovation” and “engagement”. While wait a second, when I think twice about a specific activity I experience, I ask myself about these works one by one, I have realized in action, it’s an ethic of saint and trends toward high quality.
===============================================================
Spiritual- Negative value of life
We can’t help wondering why some of us behaves so defensive that they almost suspect, question and reject every matter around. The fundamental cause of this is “human defects”.
When a person treats interactions from the outside as threaten, he acts defensive and closed-up, he fears to make any mistakes and doesn’t expect any criticism from others.
How he reacts? He begins to export emotions occupied with fear, anger, rage, depressive, hostile and jealous, which cost a lot of energy. These negative emotions would bring headache physically, make you nervous emotionally and is fatal damage of being brave and creative.
===============================================================
Spiritual- Positive value of life
Less of us are not driven by extrinsic motivations – Money, recognition, prestige status, power and even love.
All the above motivations are from the human world. You live in it, being provoked every single day, you feel unsatisfied, you become desire driven, and you starts to fulfill and accomplish something because of the external motivations. The energy you gain to achieve here is short term energy. It varies according to the signal you receive from outside, and it fades when the irritation is gone.
To the contrary, intrinsic motivations come from your deep desire, it represents who you are and who you want to be. It is the real interest of your life. At this point, you are not going to please anyone but to satisfy yourself. The intrinsic motivations create extreme formidable energy, and the energy itself is like an eternal flame, which burns for a long time.
===============================================================
Spiritual- the supremacy of value
The ultimate objective if no longer standing for individuals and it is beyond the benefit of any individuals. The outcome of the top value influence our society, country and mankind so deeply and the energy, being born from that level, is lasting forever.
We might consider this topic is too much far from us, but actually it’s around us all the time. Let’s think about the World Cup of football. Dose the players make so much efforts with the motivation of bonus? With personal fame and reputation? The answer is obviously NO. Ask Gigi Buffon and he is not a saint.

Shall we try for it?
It’s up to you. Every time when we talking about New Year’s resolution, we witnessed to many tips, methods, experiences, and I don’t care even a little about “how” to accomplish. That’s why the rest of the book which offers specific consultancy was not inspired. I believe if we do realize what kind of life quality we want, if we do realize life is so short and we don’t want to just walk into death without nothing special written on our tombstone. Our heart will tell us how eventually.
