十分怀疑作者劳伦在写这本书的时候是一种什么目的或状态——报复?发泄?整本书看下来让人觉得很不舒服——一个整天穿着Jimmy Choo,Chanel,Versace,Gucci的主编助理Andrea(现实原型就是作者自己)每天都在抱怨她的工作,上司,同事,甚至她身边的朋友。
她的工作发挥不了自己的价值——只有去《纽约客》当一名记者才是她的最终目的,时装只是浮华的表面的东西;上司,也就是此书的主人公米兰达,自始至终都像个无理取闹的老变态,只会向那些可怜的姑娘们下达一些过分的,模糊不清的,甚至是错误的指令——
为了第一时间看到最新的哈里波特,居然用飞机把书空运到巴黎;为了找到一家新开张的亚洲餐馆的评论,Andrea不得不找遍所有报纸,打电话给报社的编辑询问是否刊登过这样一篇文章,而所掌握的信息只是新开张的,亚洲的餐馆;在七十几号大街的某个古董店看到某个喜欢的老师梳妆台,Andrea就得跑遍东区西区的几百家古董店,最过分的是这家古董街根本不在七十几号大街,而在68号。诸如此类的事情太多了,我甚是怀疑作者是否有夸大的成分。就算一切属实,这也是无可厚非的——一份让百万姑娘挤破头的工作容易的了么?
我看不出这本书对职场中人能有什么帮助。Andrea是在一个错误的工作环境中开始她职业的起步。这份职业在她看来与记者或是作家没有任何的关系,她学不到任何东西;她对于时尚一无所知,也没有兴趣。尽管如此,这份职业却很有利用价值——在《Runway》工作一年所获得的认可远远大于在别的杂志工作三五年,此外她还可以利用工作多结识一些编辑记者。所以,她每天都在抱怨,忍耐,煎熬,只是为了这一年的苦可以换来日后工作的便利。这种活法真的——太不真诚了。不管是对工作还是同事,甚至是对自己的男友,也开始撒谎。
每天借出去帮米兰达买咖啡或是买其他东西的时间打电话聊天,并多花24美元为那些路边的肮脏的、精神不正常的人买咖啡——不是出于好心,而是报复——反正费用最后也是《Runway》报销,用小说中的话准确地说是一种“侵略性的报复行为”。在我看来这种做法才是真正的变态,一方面在施舍别人,别人心存感激的同时,心里确把这些可怜的人践踏在脚底,他们也只是她发泄利用的工具而已。
最离谱的是,Andrea最后居然在大庭广众之下辱骂了米兰达,然后失去了这份工作。这样的安排是否也具有报复性——让米兰达颜面尽失?不过是自欺欺人罢了。表面上看,Andrea在辱骂了米兰达之后,赶去了医院,回到了自己最好朋友lily(这位朋友出了车祸)的身边,好像她还是选择了对她重要的东西,回到了原来的自己,其实之前她的决定并非如此,她没有要赶去医院,因为她不能让自己11个月的努力付之东流,直到米兰达再次刁难她,让她没有退路,才“大义凛然”般的丢了这份工作。表面上她看不惯《Runway》的那些女孩们,可是当她得到这份工作时,她不也洋洋得意的想到:毕竟我现在是《Runway》的女孩了!
相比之下,电影中的Andrea就善良许多,虽然也一样对时尚一无所知,可是她学会了尝试,而不是抱怨,她也开始理解米兰达的痛苦,不仅仅是最成功的时尚杂志的主编,还有作为一个女人的痛苦和失败,甚至在最后能替米兰达着想。而她的离开才真正算得上是自己的选择,而不是被逼无奈。她也丢失过自己,可至少她最后诚实了。小说和电影最大的区别就在于一个在努力尝试,一个只是抱怨。而米兰达这一角色的设定也没那么极端了,还增加了它作为女人柔弱的一面。
看电影就足够了,书就不必了,没有什么积极的作用,也算不上消遣娱乐。只是一个不成熟不诚恳的姑娘在抱怨她尖酸刻薄的上司而已。这真是一本凝聚了作者怨气以及怒气的小说。
