During my on-board training, I asked a question that why information system did not use intelligence algorithms for production scheduling; the answer I got is that they were too complex and too time-consuming.
After several projects of SAP, I have to admit I have already thought Material Requirement Planning (MRP) is the only model that manufacturing plants or supply chains adopt, until recently I read Theory of Constrain (TOC).
The Goal is using a novel format to share with us the basic concept of TOC. It’s a very interesting story. My gut feeling is TOC is not widely used due to its complexity, at least, as widely as MRP. Well, I can be wrong. Besides, it is more suitable for industries which require certain level of agility, with, e.g. constantly-changing demand, or too many options for production or transportation.
However, its basic concept refreshed my mind a little bit (from overwhelming influence of SAP); and help me back to the state of “stay foolish, stay hungry “. I still believe that those simple and basic concepts are the most powerful tools.
