I switched to a German car from a small American car starting from yesterday, and that gives me a large amount of driving pleasure, its precision, its rhythm and smoothness, makes one hardly to believe. I bought my 1st car 11 years ago at Iowa City, a used American car from a car dealer. I had used it for around 3 years till I left Irvine after my graduation, and bought a brand new Japanese car after I got hired by a company at the bay area. I still remember that the weather at Iowa was so cold, that I even could not start my car until my roommate got an engine heater for me. I also remembered that it cost me 1/5 of my Ford Tempo’s value to ship it from Iowa to California while I was moving by the air. I used my prev. car here at Shanghai for over 3 years, once you are on it, you have to get used to it, there were glitches, but it was OK for me

German cars, American cars and Japanese cars, they are different technically and culture-wise. Some people prefer to drive German cars, some prefer to drive American Cars, and some prefer to drive Japanese cars. In my opinion, there are basically 4 factors effecting people’s purchase choices: cost (one time fixed cost), performance, reliability and energy consumption (cost spanning a car’s whole life). Oh, my God, is that the same standard when we usually adopt to evaluate a system, whether System-In-a-Package (SIP) or System-On-a-Chip (SOC)? During the past century, the car industry has been striving so hard to make our driving experience a pleasure, of course, in a broad sense, a car is also a system, with many software powered SIPs and SOCs inside it as electronics components along with many mechanical components, and both the semiconductor industry and software industry have enjoyed a much higher growth rate in a much faster pace than that of car industry.

Today is the very last day of year 2006, time runs absurdly fast. A lot of things happened during the past year, something bad, something good, in China, in the US, in the world, in our company and outside our company. Overall 2006 is a good year for us, and I am expecting year 2007 would be a great year for us again

In the paper titled The Innovative Organization written by Peter Drucker, he defines how an organization should behave to be innovative, and he think being creative is not being innovative. The paper was written in 1982, more than two decades, is his view on innovative organization still valid in the new economy?

In my perspective, innovation is probably most important sweet spot that a business has to aim, strick and stick with. Innovation can be technical and business-wise. WalMart is definitely not a high-tech company, in whatever aspect, and WalMart was not the very first supermarket in the retail space, K-Mart and Sears (now they were merged togther) were well ahead of WalMart. What made WalMart stand out of a handful of strong competitors? Someone may contribute it to the great leadership of Sam Walton, and others may contribute it to the state-of-the-art satillite communication system deployed at WalMart in linking with all of its warehouses, chain stores, suppliers and the headquarter. The answer is its business innovation on best breed of supplier chain management that leads to it highly competitive pricing strategy. Similar sucess was achieved by Kinko (now FedEx Kinko), I hve an impression Kinko chain stores are very agressive on adopting new technolgies, and make those small businessmen’s daily practice easy. WalMart was, and still is a family business, Kinko was a partnership business, and there were no venture capital involed, yet they still achieved great success. Of course, I might give you more live examples similar to WalMat and Kinko, which are in traditional business. Now in high-tech business, Dell is an great example, its Direct Sales business model has made Dell to be one of the Fortune 500 without significant R & D spending. Business Innovation is the left arm of Innovation, now how about Technical Innovation, the right arm of Innovation?

Technical innovation demands serious innovation, but you does not need to be the first to excel. Let me give you some examples here: MicroSoft was not the first company who worked on PC based operating systems; Oracle was not the company invented Relational Database technology, which as made by IBM; and google’s co-founders approached yahoo! co-founders for funding, when their search enigine was still in its infancy, while yahoo! was listed as No. 1 web portal with a built-in search engine in the world. So being innovative today does not mean you shall hold your leadership position tommrrow, and pure technical innovation may not yield business success in most cases. Taking Apple as an example, Apple was one of the very first companies who rolled out PDAs outside its Mac related PC product lines, coded as Newton in early 1990s, and it failed. Comparing to the sucess of Palm Pilot, timing was a little bit early for Newton. iPod is another new gadget Apple rolled out recetly outside its Mac related PC product lines, and it is a huge success. Apple becomes the leader in innovation again, and it is a great combination of technical innovation and business innovation. Similar google’s unparallel success is largely due to its adavanced seach engine technology and its brand new online ads model (both adsense and adwords), again google was not the inventor of that new online ads model, which as made by a search engine company acquired by yahoo!. So be innovative in your business model, your technology, your business process, your markets, your ways of communication, and your ways of services, so on and so forth

Hometown at CeBIT 06 ~ The World Is Flat

Sometime last year, I wrote an Editorial titled Global Localization and Local Globalization, and did not realized that Glocalization had been invented already by Thomas L. Friedman, who wrote the best seller titled The World Is Flat. I was impressed by the book titled Blue Sea Strategy, published in Chinese as well, so I went to a local bookstore to try to locate the Chinese version The World Is Flat, but failed to get it. Instead I had to order it online at amazon.com, and was persuaded by amazon.com to purchase their recommended book from the same author titled The Lexus and the Olive Tree, you have believe the power of online marketing, and that’s all done by software, no manual cold calling, drop-by visit etc. Since this was the second time we visited Germany, it turned out quite straight for us, just the same as the first time, we booked hotel accommodation, rental car online, and even two-way connecting railway tickets between Frankfurt and Munich. We were very nervous at the plane with a Munich map full of German going to Munich one year ago, and I had to ask two German gentlemen many times on how to get the downtown Munich from the airport by driving, no place is easier than in North America by driving with just a few clicks at map.yahoo.com. However, despite we had few glitches this time, we still made a big mistake, since we stayed at a hotel (again Best Western) 120 kilometers (one way, not two-way) away from Messe Hannover, which was a big headache for me since I had to drive my colleagues back and forth for one week on the highway without a speed limit, and that was still in winter with frequent bad weather at Hannover. I forgot exactly in which edition of our publication, in the editorial, I described my DATE 05 experience at Munich, and I mentioned there, that after the completion of DATE exhibition, I took a night train going to CeBIT 05 to have a look there. I was impressed by the scale of the exhibition, and that led us to skip DATE 06, and to participate CeBIT 06 instead, since there are some time frame conflicts there. BTW next year DATE 07 is scheduled in France sometime in mid-April, so there will be no time conflicts any more
At CeBIT, in the Outsourcing Hall (Hall #8), we are one of the three outsourcing companies from Mainland China; there are a lot of Indian companies, followed by Russian companies. According to official statistics by CeBIT, the number of exhibitors from Mainland China rose from three-hundred or so to more than four-hundred, second to the number of exhibitors from Taiwan, and soon gonna be No. 1 I regretted we did not have the vision to set up this blog earlier, so I have to wait till now to record our CeBIT experience due to the overwhelming tightness of Editorial/Guest Editorial schedule. For the upcoming DAC, you gonna have the chance to watch our blog’s DAC Special Edition updated at least once a day.

We did a great job at CeBIT 06, quite a few visitors went to our booth, and even there were a few competitors or potential competitors. Our freely distributed publication went out amazingly quickly, just like the way it did at DesignCon 06, and we regretted to ship too few hard copies to CeBIT, next year definitely we gonna ship much more there. There was a reporter from ComputerWorld magazine who is located in Norway also visited us, and interviewed me. We also showcased German-Chinese ICT Forum at CeBIT, I made two presentations, one for our company, and the other for Chinese Software Industry Association, since the President and the Sectary General could not make it due it their tight schedule My colleagues and me went to Hannover City Hall to attend Grand Opening Ceremony of CeBIT 06, I was expecting a great dinner there as we got at CEATEC 05 and DATE 05 among other trade show, actually nothing, instead what impressed me a lot was the opening speech delivered by German Chancellor, she said that, the globalization should be an opportunity instead of challenge for Germany, as as well Europe, instead of challenges. To be honest, she is an open-minded, smart leader with global vision, it is quite beneficial for the Germany’s sake in today’s highly competitive world The World Is Flat, that’s all I can say after our trip back from Hannover for CeBIT 06, even I haven’t got a chance to finish the book just delivered
