Two years ago, I set my annual travel destination in Cambodia. In Siam Reap, I met a local tour guide. In a chit-chat, he told me prostitutions were so common and natural considering the only chance a girl without much education is the job in a sweatshop. In I Phom Pehn, my tuk-tuk driver (who is a dodgy guy by the way) claimed his wife didn't work cos the only job she could find was in sweatshops for 2 to 3 dollars a day.
Back to China, we bought 3 dollar apiece Tee from Taobao or Vancl all the time. Honestly, they are economical. You won't spend much for a piece of cloth but yet still got a chance to show yourself from time to time. I never did any research or even read any articles about the story of these Tees. What I am curious is whether these Tees are absolutely have nothing to do with sweatshops.
I guess what I am saying is, Nike or other multinationals were picked for the target not merely because of their size and influence as they claim all the time. It's more like saying, hey, you guys as big companies have responsibility to do something good. We are not saying you shouldn't make money, but could you please consider others a bit? Set a role model, then build a industry protocle, make the whole indusry better.
So maybe, idiot, it's the system. At least we are starting to think about it.
