I got to the last page, I was outraged. Another abrupt ending, what was that all about? It left me hanging there, dangled. "Just that. No more. 'We are here'." Short, succinct sentences like this are powerful. Just as the protagonist who used these sentences felt powerful too. He thought he controled, but really he was played. This was a power game. A rat race. "Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way." Had Ryan savored? I don't know. I think he savored solitude. He lost himself completely in the run. We all need goals in life. But the rub is, what goes after the goals? So many things were falling apart while he was chasing it. He became numb. But interestingly ironic, he donated his mileage to needy children. Maybe there was helplessness in him. He might as well knew he was a puppet and he seemed to take it with pleasure. Meet all sorts of professions, throw some wild parties in Vegas. First class seats, privilege access, platinum cards, what for? Sugar-coated tricks of customer loyalty. But for him, these were his life. The protagonist whether he is a winner or loser, is up to readers to decide, that's what's intriguing about this book. Ryan's life is akin to a stock trader's life, slave and retire. Some thinks it's worth it, some not, you will just have to watch out, do not break the balance.
